How To Use Chat

I'll try to answer some of these best I can.

In order to get a permanent username you will need to go to sign up at ustream. http://www.ustream.tv/login-signup

The chat we use is ustream chat.

When you have signed up and log in using your new signon you will be at member. Visitors are those folks that use a nickname.

No answer for the colors.

The little pics that people use. Are you asking about a persons avatar that we use here in Africam?

If you come to chat directly from Africam via the link on the front page, you can take a nick name very easily when you get in the room.  Just type      /nick newname     and hit the send button.  Start with the slash mark, and put your name of choice in place of the word "newname".

Mine would look like:   /nick camfan

If you try it and it doesnt' take your name, add a number or underscore after your name.   examples:  /nick camfan_   or /nick camfan2

Registering in ustream as Xpatman suggests means you won't have to do all this...but either way, its pretty simple to get in and join us!

There is usually a moderator in the chat room, so feel free to flag us down and we'll help you.

Little Pics? Do you mean things like smileys ? like (:  P) ?

You can get the 'codes' with highliting the smiley and pressing Ctrl + C. You can paste it with Ctrl + V.

Colors: They are random.

That's what I mean - if I hadn't asked, how would I have known? I think a sticky would be very helpful to newbies. As far as I know there's no place on the home page ,or elsewhere, that tells you how to do the ustream thing, or how to make a nickname.

I dont think we need a sticky because everyone can write messages into the chat and so everyone can ask how it works and i think every chatter likes to help 'newbies' to become real chatters.

I've been banned from the chat. How do I get back in?

I'm having a problem with the chat window: the last couple of words on the right are cut off. My Vista IE8 will only open the window as a pop up. Could that be part of the problem?

I've tried Control Click on the chat link.

Another question: I've just signed up at UStream, but the chat window forgets my name sometimes. How am I supposed to re-enter the chat?

I am not familiar with vista or IE but have checked with FF on XP and the chat area word wraps when I change the area by opening the user list, or by using the zoom feature.  I wonder if maybe your monitor resolution might be the problem?  I have seen in other cases where the resolution caused problems with a chat room sizing in the past.  You might want to also ask in the chat room as the moderators there might know about the problem and a fix for it too.

This is certainly the first time I have heard of a problem like this. Is it possible to give us an image to look at?. If you are a vista user then you can use your "snipping tool" to capture what you are seeing and post it.

We will push your question out to the chat folks to see if anyone recognizes the problem and can offer a solution.

I'm sure it can be resolved.

This was not a wrap problem after all.  The text just extended beyond the right hand side of the chat dialog box, with no way to widen any border of the popup window to bring it into view.  The icons at the bottom right of the chat screen, including the user list icon, were cut off and out of sight.   (This is a 12 inch Vista laptop with max resolution of 1024 x 768 and IE 8, and this was my first day to use it.) 

But we (my technical consultant/husband and I) found an easy solution -- going to full screen mode with F11 caused a bottom scroll bar to appear, making it possible to scroll the whole chat dialog into view
